A gum disease or a periodontal disease is infection of the gum and bone that holds teeth in place . If it is not taken care of on time it can lead to tooth loss later.

Diabetic patients who have a controlled blood sugar level have less chances of having a gum disease. Research suggests that individuals with good diabetes diabetes
control A1C 8.5.

Relation between diabetes and gum disease ?

1.There might be damage in blood vessels in the gums which can lead to reduction in the blood supply to the gums which I turn can lead to infection.
2. Obesity in diabetic people may produce chemicals which make the gums inflammable.
3. Diabetic patients don’t have proper immune system which leads to gum disease.

How to prevent a periodontal disease ?

To prevent yourself from getting gum disease maintain oral hygiene. As per the advise of dentists everyone should brush your teeth twice every day for near about 2-3 mins . Use toothbrush according to your need as when if you are having overlapping teeth then use a toothbrush which is single tufted.

If you are in early stage of gum disease or periodontal disease as it called then your dentist can use deep cleaning and remove plaque . Deep cleaning works only when the patient maintains a proper oral hygiene by brushing teeth properly and regularly with flossing as it prevents plaque from building up again.Use a proper mouth wash.

A gum surgery is required when periodontitis is in advanced stage . Dentists clean out the infected area under the gum and re-shape or replace the damaged tooth supporting tissues.

If you are diabetic and want to keep your smile beautiful as ever……. then see your dentist today !

This is relatively anew investigation for the diabetics. Its abbreviated as Hb A1c. Best part is it doesn’t require overnight fasting.

Principle behind it:

Glucose in the blood gets itself attached to the membranes of red blood cells aka RBC. These stay till the life of the rbc is over ie 120 days or 3 months. So the level in blood reflects the control over 3 months.

So far it was used only for follow up recently it was made as a tool for diagnosing too by the American diabetes association

Advantages to patients

It can be done 6 monthly for well controlled states

3 monthly for moderately to poorly controlled

Doesn’t need overnight fasting

No repeated pricks for fasting and after food

Disadvantages

Can’t be used for check the efficiacy of the new drug

Can’t show controls below 3 month period

An heir to Johnson & Johnson Health Care Products Casey Johnson died of complication of diabetes called Diabetes Ketoacidosis.Johnson has been insulin dependent since childhood. An autopsy was conducted Jan. 5, a day after Johnson’s body was found at her home. It is believed that she must have slipped into diabetic coma but people can be resuscitated form that in the first 24 hours.

What is Diabetic Ketoacidosis ?

Diabetic Ketoacidosis is a life threatening condition which happens when there is not much insulin in the body , it occurs with Type 1 diabetes and occurs at any stage. It affects both male and female equally.

Causes of Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic Ketoacidosis occurs when a diabetic person becomes dehydrated . In this the body shifts from its normal metabolism to a fasting state where it starts using fat for fuel which results in increase of sugar level . As blood sugar level rises kidneys cannot retain the extra sugar there by increasing urination and dehydration . 10% of body fluid is lost when the patient slips into diabetic ketoacidosis.

Symptoms

Nausea and vomiting
Rapid and weak pulse
Abdominal pain
Low blood pressure

Diabetic Ketoacidosis is an emergency. If you have somebody with diabetes, there should be somebody checking up on that person . It requires rehydration of lost fluids and administration of insulin.

Hoping that you all had a great Valentine’s Day …… yup even if you are a Type 2 Diabetic. As diabetic people can always think of out of box on celebrating Valentine’s Day.

Moreover , one chocolate or a candy won’t do much harm to you. But the question is can you resist the temptation of having some more of these delicious chocolates which are wrapped in heart shaped boxes .

Now being diabetic doesn’t mean that you have to say “ NO” to sugar …….. you just need to watch your daily carbs .If you are a diabetic and love sugar and looking for some artificial sweeteners then you beware as they contain many artificial ingredients and more carbs than a table sugar.

But there are two natural sweeteners that are alternatives to sugar :

1.Agave Nectar : Agave Nectar comes from the Agave plant which has been used as a natural sweetener for ages and has a consistency similar to honey. The Glycemic Index (GI) of Agave Nectar is around 20 to 30 whereas regular sugar has GI of 60 to 65 .

21 gms of Agave Nectar is 60 cals and 16 carbs whereas the same amount of granulated sugar is 64 cals and 16.8 carbs. It shows that Agave Nectar has low GI which means your blood sugar level won’t shoot up as fast as ordinary sugar does.

2.Stevia : Stevia grows in S. America and is many times sweeter than the sugar so it cuts calories and carbs.

A new sugar substitute in market which contains Stevia is Truvia. It has got no calories and has got only 3gms of carbs per serving. Truvia is sold in small packets and each packet equivalent of 2 teaspoon of sugar.

Opt for natural sweeteners and keep your sugar levels under control.

Diabetic patients are more prone to heart diseases but why ?????

Diabetes speeds up the hardening of arteries and this occurs when the cholesterol level gets too high .

LDL and HDL are the lipoprotein that carry the cholesterol which circulates in our body. LDL takes the cholesterol through the circulatory system where it is needed and HDL carry which isn’t used back to the liver.

When the cholesterol level gets high the LDL deposit the left over cholesterol into the blood vessels .This extra cholesterol that gets behind makes the vessel walls less flexible and more narrow which raises the risk for blood clots , heart attacks and strokes.
Diabetic patients should watch their cholesterol level closely and should start taking proper medicines to lower their cholesterol levels .

How to lower cholesterol level in diabetic patients :

1. Avoid coconut and palm oil and use less of oil wile cooking.
2. Eat low fat diary products.
3. Have more of fruits and vegetables.
4. Avoid eating read meat.
5. Do proper exercises.
6. Quit smoking , if you are a smoker.

Recommended Cholesterol levels :
LDL cholesterol : <100 mg/dl
HDL cholesterol :45 mg/dl in men and >55 mg/dl in women
Triglycerides : < 150 mg/dl

What are the heart attack warning signs?

Pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain in the chest ,discomfort in one or both arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach ,shortness of breath ,breaking into a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

Take care of yourself and consult your doctor if you find any such symptoms immediately.

1. The Asian population is affected five times more with diabetes than the white population.

2. Almost six percent of the total world population is affected by diabetes. This equals to about 246 million.

3. India is also termed as the world’s capital for diabetes. Almost 40 million people are estimated to be affected by diabetes in India and it is also estimated that this number could go up to 70 million by the year 2025. If these statistics come true, then every fifth diabetic around the globe would be from India.

4. The main reasons for the increase in diabetes in Indians are resistance to insulin and central obesity (when the body’s weight at the middle increases, also termed as apple shaped body).

6. Almost 90 or 95 percent of the diabetic population is affected by the type2 diabetes population. The juvenile diabetes (or type1 diabetes mellitus) problem affects around 70,000 children aged under fifteen years each year.

7. There are no early symptoms of this disease and it is also termed as ‘silent killer disease’. The most easily seen early symptom of diabetes is excessive thirst.

8. Lack of activity in the daily lifestyle is seen as primary concern for increasing the cases of diabetes. Diabetes occurring can be reduced by more than half by exercising or following balanced diets.

9. Diabetes is the main cause of kidney failures. It is also responsible for around 1 million limb damages and around five million people have reported blurry vision or blindness.

Diabetes can affect many pets and most commonly older pets. In diabetes condition, the body registers high amount of glucose in the blood as the body stops producing the insulin or doesn’t react to its production. Diabetes can develop in one’s pet due to any illness, hereditary reasons, obesity and many medications (if taken for long term).

The pets are affected to type 1 diabetes if their pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin. Almost half of the diabetic cats and all the dogs are affected by type 1 diabetes. The type 2 diabetes occurs when their body stop registering the insulin production which leads to high glucose in the blood stream. Cats are more seen to be prone to diabetes than dogs.

The symptoms experienced by the pets are similar to those experienced by adults which include excessive urination and thirst, loss of weight and a noticeable increase or decrease in appetite, leg weakness (cats), blindness or cataracts (dogs) and presence of sweet odor in their breath. The complications of diabetes include seizures, weakness, confusion, dehydration and even coma.

As with the symptoms, the treatment of the diabetes in pets is somewhat similar to adults. The primary treatments include exercise and diet regulations, management of glucose and insulin shots. Glucose levels are monitored by the urine or blood. Urine tests can be done through special strips. Glucose meters record blood obtained from ear, tongue or paw. These tests are done several times in a day to keep the glucose levels stable.

Changes in diets play an important role in preventing diabetes. The cat formulas fed to the felines could be unnecessarily harmful to them as these contain high amount of carbohydrates which can increase the weight of the cat and still leave him/her hungry.

Diets for dogs should contain high fiber and cats should be given natural canned or homemade food. Other treatments include providing nutraceuticals like glutamine, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin b6; or botanical therapies like burdock root, bilberry and marshmallow.

This article is about the exercise precautions that should be taken by pregnant women and some tips to help them manage in their gestational period.

A pregnant woman experiences a lot of hormonal changes and these hormones can many times stop the body from registering the insulin. This may result in gestational diabetes.

A daily exercise regimen is a vital part of any pregnancy. Exercising daily helps the woman by reducing the stress, easier dealing with the hormonal changes and also makes them feel better. Regular exercise is a must for women who are experiencing gestational diabetes or are at a risk of developing it. Exercise allows the body to use less insulin and also keeps the sugar level in the normal range.

The pregnant woman should talk to their physician before starting a new exercise routine. These women should start slowly if they didn’t have an active lifestyle before getting pregnant. Frequent exercises (4 to 5 days in a week) help in lowering the blood glucose levels.

Any exercise period should contain warm-up and cool-down periods. The exercises include slow aerobics, jogging, vigorous walking, easy stretches and also yoga.

The exercises should be performed after taking size and flexibility into consideration. Women shouldn’t exercise if they feel faintness, dizziness, pain or palpitations. Dehydration should be avoided as the fetus and the mother need proper body fluids. Plenty of water should be drunk before, during and after an exercise regimen.

If the doctor has advised any pregnant women to take insulin to control the blood glucose levels, then precautions should be taken as exercise and insulin can lower the glucose levels too much and might even lead to hypoglycemia (abnormally low glucose levels).

If low sugar is felt, then sugar candies can be sucked or eaten which can help in the glucose levels (and taste levels) of the body. Fruits and starch can be eaten for avoiding hypoglycemia during activities.

Ideal time for testing diabetes in pregnancy is at 26-28 weeks, but same is advisable as early as possible for high risk pregnant women who are prone to diabetes because of genetic susceptibility status, obesity, previous history, other medical disorders like hypertension metabolic syndromes, gastric surgeries.

HbA1c is the test which helps to know 3 months past diabetic status.

Insulin injections are advisable.

No role of oral diabetic pills in pregnancy.
